What are prom dresses?

Prom has become more of a phenomenon each year, with dresses getting even more glamorous and luxurious each year. Prom might have originally been a tradition of schools in the USA, but it’s been adopted worldwide and gives everyone the perfect chance to get dressed up and celebrate.

Proms are often the perfect way to end the school or college year, and the perfect chance to get dressed up and let your hair down - especially if you’re usually in school uniform around your friends. Choosing the all-important prom dress can be a difficult decision, especially as there are so many choices available.

Yet the dress itself can be a glittering sequin embellished style, feature lace details or come in opulent colours like gold or silver, as well as coming in bold prints like animal print or floral styles.

Prom dresses come in so many different styles as well as patterns, colours and materials that it’s impossible to not find a prom dress that suits your personal taste and figure.

For petite women, a skater dress style that nips in at the waist can be the perfect prom style and empire waist dresses can also be perfect for adding length to a smaller figure.

Taller women can consider dramatic floor-length maxi dresses for prom or explore bold patterns or floral styles. They can also get away with more decorative styles including feather gowns or curvy figures look amazing in a mermaid style fit, these can flatter the figure and give that stunning hourglass look.

Slimmer figures can add curve and shape to their body with a wrap dress style that can accentuate a more feminine silhouette on slim body types.

When should I wear prom dresses?

Prom dresses are typically worn at the end of the school year celebrations, so often from May through to the end of June. Yet there’s no reason why you can’t wear a prom dress at any other time of year too!

With prom usually held at the end of term, this can mean dressing for summer weather so the temperature is warmer and lighter fabrics can mean you stay comfortable whilst looking your best.

Prom dresses can be bought all year round, but many people look to buy theirs in the run-up to prom once they’ve decided what style will suit them and make them feel their best on this special occasion.

As a prom dress is a dressed-up affair, prom dresses are usually paired with heels, a simple clutch bag and jewellery to compliment your dress. You can choose gold jewellery for a warmer-toned dress or go for full glamour with silver and diamond jewellery for a classic style.

You can dress a prom dress down though, So if your style is usually more relaxed, you could consider pairing your prom dress with trainers or a leather biker jacket for a more modern take.
